Highly unlikely that bad memory will cause freeze
ups.If memory is bad,it should simply drop off the
radar scope.Go to "apple" pulldown,"about this
computer" and look at built in memory. If it matches
what you believe is in the machine, then there is no
problem.

The more likely causes of freeze ups are conflicting
system extensions that you have added in the system
through software installations(assuming you are
working with a stable OS).You can turn off all your
installed extensions in the extension manager control
panel.Sometimes, the act of doing so will cause a
system freeze up ! Alternatively, you can physically
drop them from the extensions folder into the disabled
extensions folder in system. This however will cause an
inconsistency if you go back to extensions manager. It
will then prompt you to correct the difference between
it's database and what's in the folder with some
confusing radio button options .If you have the
patience, you can add them in one by one and see if
there is any effect. However, if this is a runtime
related intermittent problem, you may not detect it in
this way.

Some folks like Conflict Catcher. I haven't used it in
quite of few years and had mixed success with it back
then. Maybe someone else in the group can comment on
this.
