Subject: Re: CD-ROM for 3000/240 question

Concerning your CD-ROM drive: Our IT department runs UNIX and PCs.
They "support" PCs and I wouldn't let them near our Macs. Their
solution to any problem seems to be "It's broken. Replace it." It
isn't any surprise that your PC advisor said to replace it. Crashes
using Word(tm)? New OS installation. Mouse ball gummed up? Buy a new
mouse. Power cord not plugged in--get a new computer.

We StarMax users are cheap. I would hesitate to pay the postage for
free jumper pins. On the other hand, through this list and the
original Ben Hanes StarMax.net, I probably know more about my StarMax
and Macs in general than our professional IT people know about PCs.

Actually, you've gotten some good advice if indeed your CDROM is bad.
Does the CDROM work in another machine? StarMax users usually don't
have a collection of machines. Get a drive that is bootable (read
Apple compatible). A CDRW would be nice for backing up data. An IDE
drive would be cheaper than a SCSI, but you probably only have two
IDE ports in your StarMax (one already has a hard drive), while you
have six SCSI outlets on a cable inside. It happens that my IDE/ATA
ports are bad on my 5000, so SCSI is my choice out of necessity.

Do a bit of research. Take your time. You can do it.
