Hi: I'm new to the group; I've been happily using a StarMax 3000/240 since 1997. Not long ago, my CD-ROM drive stopped working. The tray wouldn't open. I assumed the kids bumped it off its track and I took it to a friend that fixes PCs. He said the drive was bad and I needed a new one. I suppose the best way to get one is to get a used drive from another StarMax. Any suggestions or recommendations for sources? Is this a difficult thing to replace once I have a drive? Can I do it myself? (I've installed memory and a USB card, but have limited computer repair experience.) I need the drive to load TurboTax so I can do my taxes! Thanks for any suggestions, advice! When the CD-ROM failed in my 4000, I simply took one I had pulled out of an old PC and installed it. I was surprised that it worked perfectly without any requirement to find drivers and it boots with any bootable disk with no problem. If your SM is a tower type, removal and reinstall will be obvious after you have removed the cover and faceplate. If it is a desktop, it is a little more complicated but still not difficult. The way the hard drive is installed at the end of the computer is puzzling but not difficult. I believe there is only one or two screws to allow you to remove the entire carrier for the CD-ROM. I say 'I believe' because my SM3000 is in California and I am in Washington so I can't look at it. Hope this helps.
