HI
The kernl should've been touched.you may check with
uname -a
Now for the errors I would suggest 2 approaches;
First waht I would suggest is run with the CDROM in
apt-get update dselect
This is very important
Now to the fixing ideas:
apt-get check
and see what errors do you get
try
apt-get -f install
dpkg --configure --pending
also check for errors
What can I say,I broke my system countless times when i was running
unstable so the only reliable appproach if one is to find the first
error, manually install the missing package with
dpkg --force-depends -i packagename
dpkg --force-help is your friend here
,ususally you can find the needed package in /var/cache/apt/archives
then run again
dpkg --configure-pending
dselect
choose option 3 Install
repeat steps with the next package that gives an error, try purging
the package and reinstalling it
dpkg --purge packagename
As for the x part I use gdm instead of kdm and works fine.Did yuo try to
choose the session type in kdm.gdm for one have this annoying feature
of defaulting to the last session so you have to tell it to run kde or
gnome session.
Well good luck
