Press F10 at the Compaq logo screen when you see white line blinking in
the top right corner(at power-up).This will get you in the BIOS.
Check there.Most Compaq's will give you the option of choosing
the IRQ,DMA,I/O and the OS to use.Choose other and the BIOS will
initialize the cards.Knowing the Compaq model nr. will make it easier
to give a proper reply.:-)
 Writing those down,run SAT/sound configuration module and setup the
proper values.Other than that

cat /proc/pci
cat /proc/ioports
cat /proc/interrupts

will give you an idea of waht's happening.

As for pwr-off the subject was discussed before and wasn't included due
to some laptops hanging when the kernel was compiled with this option.
I'm not sure here but maybe you can look into installing apmd and
the options this gives you.You can find other related packages

apt-cache search apm

Altough if you installed tasl-laptop then apmd is installed and it may
be as simple as man apmd
