A wonderful little book is "Magellan's Voyage, A Narrative Account of the First Circumnavigation" by Antonio Pigafetta. Magellan set out in 1519 from Spain with five ships and 270 men, in search of the Spice Islands. Three years later, one ship returned with 18 men, having done the first circumnaviation. Antonio was an Italian nobleman who survived the trip and provided this valuable narrative of the trip. The book is available from Dover, ISBN 0-486-28099-3.
