GDM is under the GPL license, therefore this is a perfectly legitimate request. 
But, as was already mentioned, Sun did the Right Thing and delivered the patches
to the gdm maintainers. They are already included in more recent versions of 
GDM.  

One could argue that, according to the letters of the GPL, they should  provide 
the patches to the binary package they deliver. But since upstream inclusion is
even better for the long-term development, I wouldn't nag about this point.
