though I should have been mor precise with my question re using the
parallel port - I think about use of the "parallel null modem" not in
the first hand as replacement for the serial (outward, eg. modem) port
but rather for peer-to-peer kind of links.

For instance, with the second machine here, used as the fax machine mostly
and as a reserve and with reasonable free disk space, file excahnge
via serial is rather slow, while one of the peer-to-peer progs using
the serial connection would sit with too much memory used; both have
idle parallel ports sitting on fast comm cards (in fact, you hardly
can get any comm card without additional parallel ports to-day).

A *small* "driver" to access the other machine's file system would be
quite useful. And via the parallel port this would be reasonably fast
too.
