The necv20 chip can indeed be used to run 80186 instructions.  This
includes (as you say) a subset of the 286 instruction set.  I used my xt
nevv20 machine to run the 286 spacific version of ez-reader after I got my
registered version of the program about 10 years ago.  It worked just
fine.  We were also able to run some programs like the games put out by
apogy software that used 286 instructions.  Not all of them worked of
course, only those that used the 186 instructions.  Kinda hit or miss
whether a spacific program will work or not, but it's worth trying, they
do run faster than their 8086 counterparts.
