Hi Jerry,

}- If I recall correctly, I *did* encounter this sales ploy where
}- someone wanted to interest me in an Apple computer. In those
}- days, the idea seemed to be that "what's easy is best, but
}- it's expensive". Now, it seems we're hearing, "the best is
}- free, but it isn't easy".

My husband has always said that's why Apple/Mac never really
caught much of the PC market, they were/are too expensive.
Also said it was why the PS2 never really went anywhere... But
I wouldn't know about that because I've never actually bought
a machine until this one I'm typing on now, bought it last year.
My very first machine was given to me and all the rest were
built from "spare parts."

}- [snip] So... here's the tactic: "You deserve this Apple
}- computer, because it's the best -- and just think of the
}- instant gratification you'll get when you start moving the
}- mouse..." And now: "You deserve a break from all those
}- Microsoft bullies and their buggy software... sure, the
}- best isn't easy, but think of the instant gratification
}- you'll get when you delete Windows and are free with Linux..."

Uh-oh, you said the boogy-word! <grin> You can also be free with
OpenDOS, at least I am. Really though, Linux is fine for those
who want to use it, but it's as John T said; the most important
thing about a computer and OS is that it does what *you* need
and want it to do. For me, and apparently for many others, DOS
is fine. It either already does what I want it to do, or I know
how to make it do what I want it to do, or I can find a program
that will make it do what I want it to do. To my mind, any
pressure to switch to Linux is no different than M$ pressure to
switch to Windows. I've been down that road, I used Win95 for a
while, and I found it to be a dead end. There's no reason to
believe Linux would be any different for me.

}- [snip] In reaction to this, the CLI interface has experienced
}- a new boom with Linux, but even that is quickly becoming
}- overshadowed with its X-Window GUI; its developers, in my
}- opinion, seem to be overly concerned with winning the
}- frustrated Windows camp by making it more and more like a GUI:
}- much stabler and secure, yes, but still terribly bloated and
}- much more complicated for beginners than DOS -- and this is
}- not in the best interests of efficient, intuitive computing
}- development and learning.

I didn't know that even Linux is going GUI, and I'm a little
surprized by this, though knowing the history I shouldn't be
<grin>. All the more reason I wouldn't switch to Linux.

As for the rest of the above paragraph, I agree.

}- But DOS remains. You can do just about anything with it.
[snip]

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Can I get an Amen?

Boanne
