todd, you make an excellent point. i still remember how stunned i was when i first heard how much feed/grain/meal goes into each unit of meat purchased at the supermarket.
also, i understand there are aspects of chemistry involved which limit this to some degree (especially when it comes to converting the oil to biod), but there are lots of oils used in processed foods, such as palm kernel and cottonseed. i suspect large quantities of these oils would be freed up for other uses in a more sane food industry (lol, "sane food industry" = oxymoron?). -chris b.
