After discussing with Vladimir, it seems that it's basically impossible to hack Distribute to use a custom version of 2to3. The problem is that it already implements hacks and workarounds fixing various issues with 2to3 and distutils, and monkey-patching monkey-patches isn't exactly easy or likely to be robust...
So we're back to the start of the discussion: if we keep bundling mpmath, we'll have to handle distribution in Python3 on our own, which is not a good idea, I think.
