I agree that these kind of things should be related to the intersection or way, rather than an arbitrary node before the intersection. What happens when someone wants to reverse the direction of the way? Currently you need to check the tags on the way, in case one of them is direction-dependent - I don't want to have to start checking all the 'nearby' nodes in case one of them has a tag which is dependent on the direction of the way.
