HELP, please. I can't send or receive mail.
I have version 2.00.6l.
I've sent this via the Web and will have to deal with replies there, too, or by phone.
I can't be on the phone and online at the same time, but I would prefer to deal with
this by phone (just because it's faster than Web mail). If you're willing to talk me
through it, please send your phone number privately and a time when I can call you.
I'm in the U.S. (EDT).
Earthlink says they don't support The Bat and won't help me. They say this even though
I tried to download through Eudora and had the same thing happen. (However, it was
Eudora 3.0.5, which doesn't have a "use authentication" setting to tick--and I haven't
tried to send anything through Eudora.) They say this even though they've been my ISP
since 1995, when they ate Mindspring, which ate my original ISP, NandO.net, in 1994.
(Boy, do I miss the speed and simple elegance of Pine, Lynx, and a shell account ...
no bells and whistles, just the info you needed, fast and sleek.)
What's wrong with my mail settings? I don't want to know the theory behind it today. I
just want someone to tell me to go here and tick that, and type this here. I won't
remember the theory now--I'm too stressed out, with my mail box filling up and getting
ready to implode.
Also, is there a way to pause the dispatcher, so it doesn't have to load from scratch?
Is there a way to set the dispatcher to tell you when something has an attached file?
File size is not a reliable indicator. I'm also getting a lot of address
unknown--can't-read-the-header entries in the dispatcher list. Then I look on the Web
and they're perfectly respectable messages.
Getting mail problems
---------------------
My mail has been screwed up ever since Earthlink invoked new authentication settings
at the beginning of the month. I was able to get them working, briefly, about a week
ago, but I'm not sure what I did and they seem to have defaulted to their original
non-working state. How? It's a Mystery. (Or Something Happened when a friend
downloaded troops.mov and Quick Time to view it while I was sleeping. Watch this short
if you like Star Wars and are familiar with the TV show _Cops._) Mail dispatcher
works--I get the list--but when I start the download, it takes forever for the first
message, which is only 677 bytes, and then it bugs out before the end and closes.
Here's the Connection Centre script:
receiving mail messages
connected to POP3 server
authenticated (plain)
1202 messages in the mailbox, 1174 new.
Receiving message 1 of 1174 [682 bytes/ds]
[progress about halfway, takes two to three minutes/ds]
FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were:
"DELE 1, RETR 2")
The first message downloads, but it stays on the server.
Sending mail problems
---------------------
Zero of however many bytes hangs on the screen for two to three minutes and I get this
message:
An encrypted email connection has been detected.
Please see help for more information on how to
transmit encrypted email.
Then it doesn't go out, and I get this message:
Server reports error. The response is: TLS not available
due to temporary reason.
I looked at the "help" file, tried what I could understand, but it didn't help.
If I go to my Webmail, I can manually delete the first message, then get the second.
However, this takes about ten minutes per message. I have dial-up and the Webmail
repaints the screen three times, and The Bat has to start from scratch with the
dispatcher. I have deleted as many messages as I can on the Web, but I still have more
than a thousand to go.
Earthlink's mail settings are appended.
Cheers,
Deborah Shaw
