Operating system and background programs use about 1.2GB of RAM when cold
booted

That's a SIN. There was a time when you could run Win98 on 64MB very nicely.
Now it takes 1.2 gigs just to boot up. Gates has to be kidding. And you
thought Madoff was a scammer.
