This Vista business isnt about cost, tho there are many that would have

So people arnt stupid,
What ever else it does, theres no point in changing at considerable
expense for no benefit.
Given Microsoft's history of monopolising everything they want, and
screw the rest.

thats a separate issue.
If Microsoft offered an OS that was as secure and as virus free as open
sourse folk would buy it and use it.
