I know I am treading on thin ice here, but I can't resist mentioning that I believe there have been (proper published peer reviewed) studies on acupuncture which showed that it might make a difference to the perception of pain. This was seized on by practitioners as proof of the efficacy of the remedy. However the studies showed that the effect was tiny, and that it didn't matter where you put the needle- thereby undermining both the theory of acupuncture and any reason to go to an acupuncturist. Just saying...
