Yeah, you should just buy a new wifi card or a USB  wifi adapter supported by  
free software. Also, please report your friends laptop and its parts to  
h-node by booting it up from a Trisquel GNU/Linux live-CD (or any other fully  
free distro of your choise) if you can. It would help.

ThinkPenguin sells USB wifi adapters. They also sell mini PCI cards which  
might be more convenient to use that USB adapters.
