Just wanted to say thankyou to all who have contributed to this discussion, some really useful links and lovely patterns. Michael - I'd love to see that one charted too, it is a very pretty alphabet :) Eowyn - I've used sewing thread too, and I did like the effect - I prefer to use fewer tablets and a slightly thicker thread (crochet #8 for instance) when possible. However I'm also using up excess knitting wool so using some simple patterns as well - no letters :)
