I could do some reference messurements on solaris 10/09 with osx snowleopard. I have an old linuxclient too.
I propose a copy over nfs with one 1gb file fired by time to get the deltatime. All i have is a 100mb network. But i could test with a gigabit lan too. Eventually your problem depends on a bad landriver. Whats your infrastructure?
