As I was watching UCD slaughter healthy trees in Clark Park
Although UCD and FoCP have been pushing for a while now to get the
dead trees removed from the park, I believe it was the Fairmont Park
Arborist who decided to cut the (non-dead) trees. I believe his
decision was based on the Morris Arboretum study from a few years
back.
That's generally correct. We've been trying to get the dead trees
removed for a long, long time, and Jannie Blackwell's office took the
initiative in getting the city to come out and take care of the matter.
We were after the dead trees in Park B. But the Fairmount Park arborist
wanted a few others taken out. (For example, the tulip poplar in the
Bowl was deemed a safety hazard because of the massive hole at its base.
It's not one that we would have removed right away, but by the time we
heard about it, it was done.)
But several dead trees have been removed, which is terrific for all
kinds of reasons. We don't have to worry about them dropping branches
and trunks on passers-by, for one thing., But we're gearing up for
planting even more trees, too-- which is what we do best, and as anyone
can see, we've been planting trees like madmen over the past couple of
years. Have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGX0iYgJBlM for
more on the subject.
