Hi epoch1970,
I saw your post and i think the extra's like iptables, vpn etc can be
handled on a network level. if you configure a router with something
like ddwrt or openwrt you can configure everything to your desire. if
you want to, you can just create a tunnel between the routers from both
sites. The picoreplayer can be used out of the box as all the extras are
on network level.

You however need 1 extra device for the LMS server, OR you can configure
1 picoreplayer device to run the LMS server next to the player.
Dont worry about syncing and reliability, this is handeled by the LMS
server and works perfectly. for artist rights wise, it depends on what
you want to play. If you play from an mp3 library, you can build
playlists and base the taxing on that. you can also stream radio and pay
a general fee. Depending on your country's laws.

I would definatly opt for raspi 2's if you plan to go full wired. This
improves the streaming stability. Also make sure you use official raspi
power supplies. Otherwise your devices might be underpowered. And for a
android squeeze controller ap i would recommend Squeezer, its free and
does everything you want.
