Greetings all,

I currently own a PM 9600 with a Sonnet G3 500 and 640MB RAM, ATI Rage
Pro Video 128 Card, two 9 GB IBM UW SCSI drives on an ATTO SCSI card, and
the standard 4 GB drive on the internal SCSI bus. I currently run OS
9.2.2 and I would appreciate any feedback about several issues related
to moving to 10.2.2:

1. Is this machine adequate for OS 10.2 ), and will it give me
performance comparable to what I have with OS 9.2.2?

Yes, very adequate for OSX! It will be a bit slower in some area's scrolling for example. But not too slow and OSX's true multi-tasking helps make up for it. Multitasking lets you run many apps at one time. You have to see it working to realize it's worth. I can leave all my apps open and things still work well in OSX. In OS 9 I'd have to close things or face slow downs or crashes. In OS 9.x I'd say my XLR8 500 mhz G3 seems apox 50-75 mhz slower then in OS 9.x
Your hardware looks good for OSX. The ATTO card may require a firmware update for OSX some versions of the cards do I believe worth checking into.
2. I am currently a subscriber to the Xpostfacto tech forum and I do read
the post relative to my machine. There does appear to be some issues that
you have to live with such as no sound control for external speakers.

Loss of sound control is only true for the general main finder sound control( system alerts etc). Full sound control is still there with sound controls in Apps (ie Quciktime, iTunes etc) Not all CD or CDRW drives work out of the box with OSX and itunes for example. However Apple keeps adding drives with OS updates and xlr8yourmac.com has drivers for many more drives. Keep in mind you are hearing from people who are having problems in the forums not the happy hundreds with few issues ;-)
3. I use Icab, and Mozilla and mozilla as my web browser and Powermail as
my mail client. Has anyone had any problems with these on an unsupported
machine with 10.2?
Camino based on Mozilla is the best MAC browser IMHO and is OSX only. Safari from Apple is getting better all the time. I use and love "Mail" app from Apple. I was and am a big "Eudora" fan which I still use in OS9 but only for archiving . I live in OSX and no longer use OS 9 including classic. It did take a lot of getting used to things. I found that rather then fighting the new ways of doing thing it was bet to learn them. So Window shades is the only OS 9 style add on I use. The Dock takes getting used to hated it for some time.

4. I have an apple laserwriter select 360, will I lose the use of this printer in 10.2?

5. I have a verizon ADSL modem ( 640k) will it function under 10.2?

It should work just the same.
6. Is OS 10.2 more or less reliable than 9.2.2 on these ( 9600) machines?

Solid once things are setup correctly OS rarely freezes or crashes unlike OS 9.x. Usually you just force quit an app that is acting up and re-open it without restarting etc.
7. Are there any gotcha issues that I show be aware of for converting to 10.2?

In general you can't boot a cd with OSX on an old world Mac. The new DiskWarrior 3.0 is the only known CD that can be booted using XPFacto from OS 9.x . It then boots and lets you run DW 3.0!
So in general Utilities on CD like Norton & Diskwarrior 2.1 are booted from OS 9.x which then lets your repair OS 9 & X disks as the work around. XPfacto 3.0 at some future date is expected to include OSX CD booting and external firewire drive booting. Which is also another issue. Firewire is great on our machines but no booting at this time. l've been using OSX full time since Sept 2002 and love it on my S900/J700 Umax clone which is a lot like your machine in many ways. It took getting my printer to work in OSX before I could make the move. later Will S
Thanks
