Before I start this, let me mention that for me computing is about large Photoshop and Illustrator files. So large monitors with lots of zoom and scroll (which seems to be a weakness in X).I currently own a PM 9600 with a Sonnet G3 500 and 640MB RAM, ATI Rage Pro Video 128 Card, two 9 GB IBM UW SCSI drives on an ATTO SCSI card, and the standard 4 GB drive on the internal SCSI bus. I currently run OS 9.2.2 and I would appreciate any feedback about several issues related to moving to 10.2.2:
I've run OSX on a PM 8600 with Sonnet G4-800 and on a B&W with G4-350.
You can never have too much RAM.1. Is this machine adequate for OS 10.2 ), and will it give me performance comparable to what I have with OS 9.2.2?
As someone else said, check the scsi card for compatibility. Plus OSX is very particular about SCSI termination.
In terms of the video card, I've found that on a 19" CRT a Radeon 7000 with 32Mb is barely adequate, an IXMicro Twin Turbo is pretty awful. All that transparency and shadows really eat away at graphics speed (if anybody know a hack for turning off the transparency, I'd love to hear it). The lag time on redraw is a serious problem for me.
6. Is OS 10.2 more or less reliable than 9.2.2 on these ( 9600) machines?I've crashed individual apps, but I've never crashed X. Then again I've never run 9.2 on an unsupported machine.
7. Are there any gotcha issues that I show be aware of for converting to 10.2?Replacing software. Sure you can run all the old stuff in Classic, but there is a definite speed hit. OSX compatible software is a must.
Other OSX turn-offs:
-System-owned files (Lord, save me from another clean install)
-Microsoftian file proliferation (to paraphrase Chandler Bing, "Could there be any more files in the system folder?" and do they all really need to be there? Why does Safari have 16 cache folders with 16 subfolders in each? How about an iTrim app for reducing system folder size?)
-Bulbous bubble-gum buttons (my kingdom for a less elaborate theme)
There. Let the flamin' begin.
