I'd still peel off a chunk for root, it'll make corruption less
likely and limit the damage if it happens. On regular BSD I usually
have separate partitions for root, usr, var, and swap, but the
way OS X organizes things I think one "system" partition would
do.

I have a 4G system partition, which seems ample. That would
leave most of the disk free for files and applications. If
you install apps in the system partition, maybe 6-8G depending
on how much space the apps and fonts and things take up. I
ended up using 4G because it was convenient to have the size
match my "emergency backup" drive which is a 4G seagate.

You don't need to have OS 9 on the same partition or drive with
OS X, and I would say it's better if you don't. Doesn't matter if
it's 9.1 or 9.2 or 9.2.2.
