Well I took the big plung and tried to install
10.2 on
my Umax S900. Things didn't go too well. I
partitioned
the 18gig HD (9gig for 10, I have 3 other"mini"
hd,
one running 9.1) put in the 10.2 CD and started
XPF.
Designated the CD to load 10 into the partition,
it
restarted and then I got the apple logo. That
changed
to a black screen with code running. There was
alot of
it but I noted some and some in particular seemed
to
repeat. (I'm on another computer now). Here is
some of
what it was writing:

can't get dependencies for kernal extension
"oldworld
support. patchedIOSCSICD Drive"

load kernel_extension():Can't get dependencdies
for
kernel extension" old world.support.Patch SCSI
Device
Type 05"

Sam Multimedia: Read or Write failed,
ASC=0X04,ASCQ=OXO1
(This it repeated about 10 times)

Still waiting for root device
(This was repeating every couple of minutes,
nothing
else was happening)

To get back to Mac OS 9, try booting with the option key held down. That should do it.

Most of what you describe is normal, except for the
repeated "SAM
multimedia" errors (well, and the "still waiting for
root device"
error). It's normal to get one SAM multimedia error,
but not that many.

One possibility is that your CD-ROM drive is not
supported in Mac OS X.
Are you using the original CD-ROM or an upgrade?

(I'M NOT USING THE ORIGINAL CD-ROM, IT DIED AWHILE BACK, THERE IS A SECOND CD-ROM <A BURNER> THAT I'M USING <IT WAS INSTALLED BY THE PAST OWNER>. WITHOUT STARTING THE COMPUTER <HAVEN'T TRIED THE REBOOT YET> I CAN'T AT THIS TIME GIVE YOU THE BRAND. BUT THE THERE ARE THINGS ABOUT THE CD-ROM THAT HAVE CONCERNED ME IN THE PAST: WHEN STARTING THE COMPUTER THE EXTENSIONS LOGOS PARADE THEMSELVES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE START UP PAGE. THE CD WITH A STARBURST COMES ON AND THEN A QUESTION MARK COMES ON TOP OF IT. I THOUGHT IT HAD TO DO WITH THE REMOVAL OF THE OLD CD-ROM. THE OPPERATING CD-ROM SEEMS TO WORK, I HAVE NO TROUBLE BURNING DISKS, IT READS CDS I'VE BURNT. HOWEVER IT HAD SOME PROBLEM READING SOME OTHER CDS, SUCH AS THE CDS FROM MAC MAGAZINES. I THOUGHT THAT IT MIGHT JUST BE THE CDS, BUT YOUR QUESTION MAKES ME WONDER IF THE CD-ROM IS BEING SOMEHOW SELLECTIVE OR FAULTY.

HAVE YOU NOTICED MY QUESTION ABOUT MY G3 CARD, WAS I
SUPPOSED TO PREPARE IT BEFORE USING XPF <ITS AN XLR8>?

Hi Jim,
You do the G3 card prep afterwards. See if you can do it wo the pulling the card. I can't recall if you need that anymore. You run the program in 9.1 and it produces an Icon you use with the GrabL2CacheSetting program. When you start X the XPF will have taken correctly placed L2Cache item so the board will work at best speed. If you don't do this or aren't able to, X will still run but AFAIK it will be slower. But then whatever the speed, there was no way you could run X before XPF:-)

I share you angst about the CD as my busted CD stopped my XPF too. Looking at the failed attempts, the broken CD player did a partial install but could never finish. So alarm bells justified or not go off when I hear suspicious CD player tales. HTH.
