I have been considering getting a new mac this year. I had been trying

the fat binaries and run on either. Then get a MacTel laptop.
I just snagged an outgoing model dual 2.0 G5 for a couple of hundred
less than the new (inferior due to 4 GB limit and slow PCI) dual 2.0
model. I'm very very happy with it and its single-CPU performance is
on a par with my fast x86 Linux machine (an Athon XP3200+)
I can't see any reason at all to not buy the excellent machines that
Apple is selling right now (or the PPC updates to them that will be
coming out in the next 12+ months). If you thought it was time for you
to upgrade then it's still time, and you'll get two years of good use
out of it before the transition (and as much as you want after the
transition, depending on how often you normally upgrade) anyway.
