I just followed your steps now and am now at the end where you say: "Go back to the OuterPane design and delete the leftmost button (undo). Compile and run again. The question marks have disappeared and the arrows/square are there!"
So, the problem is fixed, i.e., your code is working in the end in the way you'd like it to be.
