You suggestion that ALL academics deride Wikipedia is false. When my
students used Wikipedia, I required them to have other supporting
sources just as when they use other encyclopedias. I never accepted
ONE reference on a topic. Even the Britanica has bad articles, but the
chance of finding an article that has been messed with is greater with
Wikipedia.

I am not the only professor who encourages use of Wikipedia as ONE of
MANY resources.

I have attended numerous community colleges and four universities and I
have /never/ had a college professor allow me to use wikipedia as a source.

YMMV.

This past semester my wife was told that she could use Wikipedia as one of many sources. She was told she had to have many online resources besides wiki but that she could now use it.

Depends on the University and, they are adapting.

Last time I went to college, there was no Wikipedia to use.
Now that college is using "portals" for testing, grades,
teacher to student messages, etc.. If you do not have internet
access at home, you are out of luck. Where I am now, only about
1/4 of the people have a computer.

There are some places that require Ipods or Iphones and if you do not
have one you are required to get one. Some places even require you
to have all the same Macs. College is not what they use to be.
They are now using GPS tracker phone to see who are in class and
who are skipping. To bad if you do not have a GPS phone, you have
to buy one or else.
