So don't.

I call "Bullshit!" on that one.  How is Vim going to advance without
taking inspiration from other editors?  Sure, we can come up with our
very own ideas, but understanding the "battlefield" and your "enemies"
certainly makes things easier.

Finally, having text properties opens up for some really funky
features, like those already mentioned, more advanced
abbreviations/code-completion, and so on.  Sadly, the way Vim is
designed does make it very hard to add this kind of feature.

However, it can sort of be simulated by having marks that stick to the
text position that they mark, instead of line + fixed column.  (We
don't have this kind of mark at the moment.)
