@ Brad McCartney & D. Finnigan:

Thanks for the tip, guys. It helped me remove the PRAM battery cage.

I thought I would try to switch out the PRAM battery from a less old
Mac (PowerCenter Pro 180 clone) and test it in the Centris 610. No
change. Probably because that PRAM battery is dead too.
------------------------------------------------------
I read the following on this web site (http://macfaq.org/hardware/
logicboard.shtml):

"The Centris 610 and its later variants (C/Q 660AV, Q610, Power Mac/
Performa 61xx) will also fail to output a video signal when the PRAM
battery dies (or if no PRAM battery is present, or if it's inserted
the wrong way). There is no known workaround for this problem; you'll
have to replace the battery."

If this is correct, I wonder why my Centris DOES output video. It
displays the ? Disk icon and mouse arrow. I mean, I'm glad it does,
but it leaves me confused.

I also read the following on LEM:

"A dead or low PRAM battery can prevent a system from booting or can
cause erratic boot behavior; this is particularly common with
laptops. If a replacement battery is not available or the battery is
inaccessible, plug in the AC power adapter and leave the computer
charging for 30-60 minutes. This often recharges the battery enough to
permit booting. If an hour doesn't work, leave it plugged in overnight
and try the next day."

So I tried leaving the Centris plugged in overnight. No change. I
guess the PRAM battery is beyond help. Like Ken Daggett said, "dead
as a doornail".

Guess I'll have to suck it up and buy a new PRAM battery.
