Centris 610
flashing question mark

Yes, I do hear the hard drives spin up, and I feel a bit of
vibration from them.
I also hear the normal startup bong sound.
The bong indicates that the self-test passed -- the power manager,
processor, memory bus, memory, etc, are all ok.
And since the HDs are spinning up... the problem is not the PRAM
battery or its contents.
I have already tried starting up from a floppy with the hard drive
cables disconnected and it didn't work.
The flashing question mark indicates that the bootstrap was unable to
find a valid operating system from which to boot. It first checks
the floppy, then each HD (internal, then external).
The floppy from which you're trying to boot... do you know it has a
valid System on it?
@ Jeff Walther - FYI, I don't have a CD-ROM drive in the Centris. The
middle bay is installed with an extra hard drive. How do I provide
SCSI termination if I remove both hard drives?
If you disconnect all the SCSI devices then termination is moot.
Either way, this has NOTHING to do with your inability to boot from
the floppy.
...SCSI termination is required to inhibit signal echo off the end of
the cable chain. Iff no cable, then there ain't no echos!
@ hartonj & Beachycove - Thanks for suggesting the floppy drive fix.
It never even occurred to me that the floppy drive could be busted,
because it seemed to accept disks and spit them out like it was
working. I will try to clean it carefully, since I've never done that
before. Yikes!
Yea, what they said.
Concentrate your efforts on that floppy drive. Make sure the floppy
contains a valid System, etc.
