Macs don't need drivers installed for removable media if the drive is powered on AND a disk is in the drive before the Mac is turned on. The computer loads the driver off the disk and you can change disks during that session, but it's best to ensure all your removables like Zip, Magneto Optical, Bernoulli, SyQuest etc have been formatted with the same software. You can usually mount a removable from a drive that wasn't ready before booting the Mac with a SCSI mounter utility like Mt. Everything. It attempts to do the SCSI scan and mount the Mac normally does during boot. MO disks are super rugged, never (AFAIK) have head crashes and never wear out* because they're read and written similar to a rewriteable CD. They're also faster than a Zip even though most of the MO disks require two passes for writing, one to erase and a second to write. LIMDOW (Light Intensity Modulation Direct OverWrite) drives and disks do writing in a single pass. Standard MO disks in a LIMDOW drive still use two passes for writes. *Though it may be possible the phase change metal layer could stop responding to the laser. -- ----- You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
