I have never used the FWB software for RAID ( I like Hard Disk Speed Tools from IntechUSA ) so can't give advice about the software.
I've successfully used FWB RAID Toolkit on my 840av. I built an array using 2 8GB U160 drives hangin' off a Jackhammer. I'd do it again but I struggle to find anywhere to put the Boot drive (on the internal bus) as the 840av only has 2 drive bays!
Make sure that you are not duplicating ID's, like having a drive on the internal bus set to "0" and one on the Jackhammer set to "0". While I understand that you should be able to do this for the sake of troubleshooting it is one less thing to have as a potential problem.
You also may need to have an active terminator at the end of the cable in order for those Wide drives to operate correctly.
I have a very expensive U160-grade cable on my drives that has an active termination bock wired to the end on it's own.
