What I was saying is exactly what you're pointing out. Other posters are
saying, I think, that Apple puts the chip into their cables while other
manufacturers do not, thus causing the error to be triggered. But that
would create so many complaints that it would really cause a ruckus.

Supported" Issue
I'm not sure what you're saying in this message. It is the case that
approved Lightning cables have a microchip in them to authenticate that
they are Apple approved. This is easy enough to look up on the web with
a Google search. The wikipedia page at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_%28connector%29 for example says
the following:
Official Lightning connectors contain an authentication chip that makes
it difficult for third-party manufacturers to produce compatible
accessories without being approved by Apple.
I've seen this discussed on this list multiple times. I suspect the only
reason it doesn't come up more often is because most people are probably
using the cable that came with their Apple device or they're getting an
Apple approved cable.
I have no idea how many complaints Apple gets, but I'm sure it's easy
for them to turn them away and just let those people know they need an
Apple approved cable.

If that were the case, every cable that did not have this chip in it
would trigger such a message, and there would be hundreds of thousands
of complaints. On this list, anyway, this has not come up often.

Hi Charles,
You are right, there is a difference between the two cables. The
Apple product has a little chip inside that lets the phone know that
this is an approved cable. The non-Apple cable does not, hence the
triggering of the unwanted announcement.

I don't think that this is a scheme to make money. There must be
something different about that particular cable that causes the
alert.
In order to give flexibility and strength to cables, they are made
of stranded wire, and if only one strand breaks, it can cause
problems. This might be what is happening, although this is
conjecture on my part, based on my past workings with making
cables using a soldering iron, electronic solder, wire and jacks.

Hello there,
Yeah it’s all about the money. Each cable and transformer
costs so the more they sell the more they make.

Hi Alan,
This should not harm your phone at all. I charge my phone
using both a micro USB cable along with a lightning to micro
USB adapter and I get this message all the time when I plug
the phone in and once the phone is done charging. Thus far,
neither my iPhone 5s nor my iPhone 6 has been damaged in
anyway that I can tell from using this method. I really wish
that there was a way to turn off that annoying announcement
but, I'm sure that it is to apples advantage to annoy and or
scare us into using only their proprietary cables.

Hello List,
I reported a day or so ago that I'm getting a "This
accessory may not be supported" message from my new iPhone 6
when I charge it using its lightning cable plugged into
either a USB extension cable connected to my computer or one
connected to the Apple AC adapter. At least one other
confirmed this message and got a 2-meter lightning cable
from the Apple Store in order to avoid it.
I can now confirm that I only get this unsupported accessory
message after my iPhone is fully charged. I believe others
have also reported this same result. So, I decided to save
the $30 on the 2-meter lightning cable and continue to use
my USB extension cables to provide more length since the
phone does charge with this arrangement.
If anyone thinks my approach could be detrimental to my
iPhone, I'd love to hear your comments. Thanks.
