The information is stored on the tag. These are basically NFC tags.
The concept is similar to that of the pen friend except that the phone
is used to basically power the system. As I commented, I prefer the
tiny little tag reader they sell for about $100 because it's faster
than using your phone, but it's completely optional in terms of
functionality.
