Hi Alan,

There’s a feature under the device menu to transfer purchases from the device
to iTunes, so this will take care of the apps thing.

In terms of the Ringtones, this should come over when purchases are transferred.

In terms of the data, you can back it up to the iCloud, at which point, you an
retrieve it using the cloud back up service.

If I’m incorrect, someone can please correct me.

Each device you sync with iTunes is treated separately even though all the apps
are in the same folder in iTunes. So, if you have both an iPhone and an iPad,
iTunes keeps track of which are which.

  Subject: iTunes Syncing Advice Sought

A few months ago when convincing a friend to use iTunes to backup and upgrade
her iPhone 5 to iOS 7, she got burned when her phone had to be totally wiped
and re-activated before the upgrade would complete. Also, since all the apps
she had were obtained using her phone which had never been synced to her
computer using iTunes, she lost all her apps and related data.

I've since learned that backing up your phone to your computer with iTunes
only backs up the apps which have been synced to the computer with iTunes.

I am now attempting to get totally familiar with iTunes and syncing so that I
have no further surprises in the future. The first question I need help with is
how to proceed when the phone being synced has much on it that the computer
does not and the computer also has items on it that the phone does not.
Specifically, the phone has all the apps and related data and the computer's
iTunes has several custom ringtones not on the phone. How does one perform a
sync without losing one of the differing data sources? I'm assuming the sync
will prompt you to pick which device controls the sync the first time it's
done, i.e., which device's data survives and controls the sync. What I want is
the ability to keep all the data from both devices the first time the sync is
completed.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? Thanks in advance for
any assistance.
