Well, applets can't multicast easily. (some restriction in the
java sandbox model)

I am developing java/vrml but not within a browser. 

It should work at some point in time on all platforms, I hope!

(without the applets I have to do something to control the interaction
with the world - I use a cone to connect/disconnect. the chat tool is
not needed, as we have audio to do that)
