Well, he was, of course, murdered. Whether he was murdered for CF is the issue. I agree with you, this is highly unlikely.
There is no conceivable motive for such a murder.
The one possible motive that you did not address is pure anger. While I do not believe it to be the case, it is not unimaginable that Gene pissed off some powerful people. Neither do I believe that Tinsley was murdered. However, he was asking questions about the Jason Group shortly before his death. Possible? Yes. Probable? No. Not in my opinion.
Finally, it should be noted that the police have targeted a likely suspect, who committed suicide I believe.
Like the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, this only feeds the conspiracy theory.
