Gene pissed off a lot of people--but if someone wanted to kill him, it would have been far easier to simply off him while he worked one of his many late nights at the office. That is, anyone who would watch him enough to know he was going down to the rental property would also know he spent lots of nights, alone, at the office, and that anyone could sneak up on the building with ease and shoot him through the window. I agree with Jed. Though it's tempting to try to make sense of Gene's death, given the timing of the DOE review and whatnot, senseless deaths and murders happen all the time, and this is simply one of those.
