Actually it was more Apple than Microsoft, which resented the licensing
fees that Adobe was charging and their tight control over the Type1 font
standard. The fact is that first TrueType font rasterizer was made by
Apple (it ran on an Mac SE if I recall correctly). Its just that
Microsoft kind of took the standard and ran with it so most people
believe it is a Microsoft thing.

Still true to this day. But we're in luck. The latest release of FreeType
includes support for both TrueType and Type 1 fonts. So now we can use
both without having to rely on the Type1.library, which relies on the
post.library etc... I hope that the ttf author will include it in the next
ttf.library (maybe the library will have to be renamed then :)
