I've never taped my spey rod together because I thought it would be such a big mess and I've never had a problem with mine coming apart. I was taught to push the sections together with a slight twist just as you seated the parts together.

What's the downside to taping your rod? Maybe gunk on your ferrels? Or just
the pain in butt messing with tape?

There has been a lot of discussion on various spey sites vis-a-vis
taping of ferrules. I used too but now simply check my ferrules
periodically while fishing.
