For my money the problem with taping is the false sense of security it
gives.  Joints come loose even when taped and if you are not checking the
joints then the rod will break anyway.  I teach my clients that each time we
get out of the boat to fish a run we check the rod joints, reel drag, hook
point and knot.  This way we are ready to fish at each stop and have a
minimum of failures due to gear.  It only takes a minute to get it all
right.

BTW, when joints are coming loose you will feel a little click in the blank
during the cast.  If you feel anything out of normal when you are casting it
is a good idea to stop and have a look.
