If you use 3M tape you will not get the gunk on the rod. The only downside is it may take you 5 minutes longer before you are fishing. When unraveling the tape after fishing just wind the tape down and wrap it up on the bottom section. Tape can be reused several times before it loses its stick.

The upside is you do not break rods due to loose ferrules as you found out. Next to car doors probably the biggest reason people break spey rods. Although, even if you tape it is good practice to keep checking them throughout the day.

A 3 dollar roll of tape is the best insurance money can buy.

What's the downside to taping your rod? Maybe gunk on your ferrels? Or just the pain in butt messing with tape?

Mark,

There has been a lot of discussion on various spey sites vis-a-vis
taping of ferrules. I used too but now simply check my ferrules
periodically while fishing.

Leland.

Well I was out trying to get a little spey casting practice in at green
lake
and I wasn't having a very good time of it. I was trying to add a
little snap at the end of the cast when I heard a crack and the top of
my rod flew off. Now I didn't have a fly on the end of my line so I
carefully pulled it in hoping the line wouldn't slide through before I
got to it. As I walked back to my car I noticed that about a 1/4 inch
down from the top of the second to last piece had broken off, kinda
weird. I'm guessing the top
piece
must've been sliding up and just broken off the last bit.
