Sandboxing was not implemented in Snow Leopard.

When you connect any external drive to your Mac Spotlight will immediately
start indexing it.
This process could take some time depending on how many drives you have
attached, and how many files are on those drives.
Then Spotlight will re-index any changes to your files on your Mac and on any
connected external drives.

You can exclude any drive from Spotlight.
Go to System Preferences / Spotlight and click the 'Privacy' tab.
You can add any drive that is currently connected to you Mac in there and
Spotlight will never again attempt indexing them.

Cheers,
Ronni
