Let me change that to "before we do a final release".
I think the new system is (was, when I last tested it) just as good as the 
current one, with allowing better future extensibility and apparently improved 
performance. Thus I think keeping it is good. I will look through my local 
branch the next days, to see whether there is anything not too broken which I 
can commit.
And I need to look into the way we currently do piercing projectiles, since at 
least the flamers got broken by that obviously. I hope I find time for that 
soon...
