Meloni or Fenelon (the course is 6 weeks online) would do as a beginning. Ullman would be better for a second level. None would do what you are trying, Joseph. That would probably be best with something like what John Hughes suggested -- php and mysql. But only after the foundational readings.

That was the attraction of the book I have been tripping up on. That book also reveals (through its failures) better ways to do it. And many will not want to, or not be able to, attend classes. (I've just realised how hard I'm selling the idea.
