I too went with a 5in3 case for HDDs, in a nice portable Mini-ITX case, with Intel Atom. More of a SOHO NAS for home use, rather than a beast. Still, I can get about 10TB in it.

I can also recommend the embeddedSolaris project for making a small bootable Solaris. Very flexible and can put on the Admin GUIs, and so on.
