The Baha'i Studies Listserv Personally, I think it quite likely that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. As a Baha'i, I agree that the Revelation allows for that possibility. As a scientist, there is no evidence that such life exists, and at the same time there is also no evidential or theoretical reason to believe that it does not. The question is open, in my judgment.
The problem is with the statement that intelligent extraterrestrial life is here with us now and that there is a vast conspiracy to conceal that from us, and that's why we don't have any evidence. A more likely explanation to me is that there's no evidence because there aren't any aliens here at the moment. As one pundit once said, with tongue in cheek, the proof that there's intelligent life in the universe is that they haven't tried to contact us yet. I would suggest people interested in the topic read Troxel's paper on the subject - http://bahai-library.com/troxel_extraterrestrials_exotheology Abstract: Theological statements on extraterrestrial life in Christian and Baha'i texts, and in the work of Giordano Bruno and Galileo. Notes: Abstract: This article discusses theological statements of the possibility of extraterrestrial life (ETI) in the universe in Christianity and the Bahá'í Revelation. The persecutions of Giordano Bruno and Galileo are used to disclose the dogma of the Catholic Church concerning ETI. Quotations from the Bahá'í Writings are given to disclose the exotheology of the Bahá'í Revelation. Author notes that this paper passed review by the United States Bahá'í National Center Literature Review Office in August 1996. The quote from "Divine Philosophy" is included there. It's rather long and I'd say it looks pretty comprehensive on the subject, but I don't see anything there to get particularly excited about. ----------- It doesn't matter whether the sun shines if you never go outside. __________________________________________________ You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:arch...@mail-archive.com Unsubscribe: send a blank email to mailto:leave-707382-27401.54f46e81b66496c9909bcdc2f7987...@list.jccc.edu Subscribe: send subscribe bahai-st in the message body to ly...@list.jccc.edu Or subscribe: http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/all_forums/subscribe?name=bahai-st Baha'i Studies is available through the following: Mail - mailto:bahai-st@list.jccc.edu Web - http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/?forum=bahai-st News (on-campus only) - news://list.jccc.edu/bahai-st Old Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/bahai-st@list.jccc.net New Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/bahai-st@list.jccc.edu
