Try installing your O/S using the stabdard interface, and then switching

Is it after installing Mandrake 7.2 then changing the IDE (ATA33/ATA66)

 Can Linux ran properly afterwards

Keith
use a text editor (vi or pico)
and edit the /etc/inittab file.
Look for a line that reads:
'Default Run level' ( at the beginning)
a few lines down there is a line that is not commented out (#)
yours is probably :
'id:5:initdefault'
change the 5 to a 3 and save the changes.
oh yeah you must be root.
when you boot again you'll go right to a text login prompt

[newbie] TFTP and MDK 7.2

2001-02-02 Thread Eunice Thompson

I`m trying to backup the running configuration of a Cisco router
to my Linux box using TFTP. I`ve edited the inetd.conf files, created
the
appropriate directory (tftpboot, according to all literature that I've
read)
and file, touched the file, edited the hosts.allow
and .deny files, changed permissions, restarted inetd and I`m still
unable to
execute this seemingly simple task.
I keep getting error messages from the
router of either:
Error code 1-- file not found, or Error Code 2-- Access violation.
Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong or leaving undone?
Thanks

what type of card are you using?

are you dual booting on this laptop?
if so does the card work in windows?
Do you have pcmcia, and the network enabled at startup?
when linux is booting up and after it enters the Interactive mode,

Basically Win9x's autoexec.bat/config.sys only affected DOS programs anyway.

Anyone out there have any advice, or maybe a xf86config I can take a look

put the installation disk in and do an expert install,
when you get to the disk partitioning, just delete the linux partition,
click done then exit the install

if you're using grub then select failsafe and it will take you to a

from here you can type Xconfigurator and strt experimenting with monitors,

the end of the installation when asking to pick my monitor, no matter what monitor I
pick, the screen flickers and is all chopped up, I can't even see the sign on box
enough to sign in. I have an ATI Rage Fury 128 bit 32MB video card on a NEC
MultiSync XV15+. Even though I know that Mandrake supports the video card and the
monitor is even listed in the database, it still continues to flicker and be chopped
up. Please help me resolve this problem as I am anxious to start using it.

Marcia,
try to have at least 64 MB of memory, Windows will appreciate it.
I saw a post of yours asking about an Emachine laptop; i won't say anything
abot that brand, but stay away from CELERON processors; go with an AMD or a
good ol' Pentium. I myself use a Toshiba. They are one of 'THE NAMES' to go for
as far as laptops-- good support, warranties and no problems with Linux.
I've installed Mandrake on numerous laptops, as it's my distro of choice and
find that it installs just as well as on the desktop. If you can get a larger
hard drive now, you won't have to worry about upgrading soon.
You really don't need to use Partition Magic- just install Windows first, then
put the Mandrake installation CD in and do a 'Custom' install.
When you get to the partitioning of the drive you'll find that the whole drive
is one big FAT partition. If you click on it there's an option to resize
and it will also show just exactly how much space Windows is taking up.
After you resize you can either manually create the partitions or click on
'Auto-allocate' and then 'Done'

Hope this helps

Re: [newbie] RedHat 6.2 GUI Login Problem

2000-08-12 Thread Eunice Thompson

Hmmm
First I must really emphasize that this is a MANDRAKE list.
Now that that's out of the way, are you in X when you do the
ctrl,alt,F7?
If so then that's the problem.
When in X, if you want to switch to a text console, then you do ctrl, alt
F'n',
where 'n' = a number 1 -6.
By default X is on tty7, so if you do the "ctrl,alt,F7" thingy while in
X , I believe you've caused confusion in your system.
To get out of X and back to any login prompt, whether, it's a text mode
login or the GUI
try:
  CTRL-ALT-Backspace.
One Final WORD...
This is a Mandrake list, so why not give it a try?

  Jim

In Linux - you can leave the IP and netmask address blank; you must enter the
router's IP for the gateway.you can leave the primaryname.domain as
localhost.localdomain.
I also have a Linksys router attached to a cable modem and although my ISP uses
dhcp I was unable to get the router to work when using DHCP from ISP in the
router setup; I finally got it to work by letting the router assume that I had a
static IP and entering all the necessary items during the router setup( you can
get all this info, i.e., host name, domain name ip address, gateway, dns ip if
you're also using Windows by using 'winipcfg'for Win98 or 'ipconfig' for WinNT at
a DOS prompt )
Then i have my router as a DHCP server.
As I sit here thinking about it maybe it would work if , in the router setup you
indicated the ISP as DHCP and then assign each PC an IP address and netmask using
the router's IP as a gateway (of course). I've never tried it that way though.

If you automatically boot into X at startup and subsequently X fails, do
not ssume that you have to do a reinstall.
if you are using LILO then at the boot prompt just type in linux 3 and
it will boot to a command prompt, from there you can login and as root
run Xconfigurator to fix or just to reset (?) the Xserver.
A lot of people that I've talked to don't boot into X for this very
reason.
Also if X is crahing a lot maybe you should play around with the
settings in Xconfigurator until you get one that seems stable.

I wish I could; I do know that you would probably be better off
uninstalling Boot Magic, putting your Win95 boot disk in then at the A:\

... then put the Mandrake installation CD in, do an upgrade, and then
when it comes time to install the boot loader- LILO or grub it should

just took the defaults for the monitor, which was a generic high

Everything worked fine except that freakin USB mouse, so he has to use

If it's already working take a look at the /etc/modules.conf file to
see what alias it's using.

to add it manually; it's the 'pcnet_cs' module.

Re: [newbie] cable modem blues no more

2000-06-24 Thread Eunice Thompson

Mark,

It was my pleasure, I'm glad everything worked out.

When I first installed Mandrake I could't get my printer to work either-
it is a parallel port Canon 4400 which every piece of documentatiion says
should work in Linux.

It worked fine in windows so I was stumped.

One day as I was waiting for the LILO prompt after POST, I noticed
that my parallel port was set to disable ( this is the screen immediately
after the memeory check and hardware detection when you first turn your
computer on and it lists everything- irq's, port settings, etc-)I went
into my bios , enabled the parallel port and turned the printer on, booted
into Mandrake and during the boot sequence i heard the printer initialize--IT
WORKED!!

I don't know if your solution to your printer problem will be as simple
as this, but it is something to check as you run down the list of possible
causes.

Good Luck

Re: [newbie] Cable Modem Blues

2000-06-22 Thread Eunice Thompson

if you still have Windows installed , make sure the modem is connected
and then boot into Windows. ( I'm assuming that the modem has already
been installed and configured for use) if you're using Win98 then go to
StartRun, type in winipcfg and select OK (in WinNT do the same except
the command is ipconfig).
A window should come up, select the Nic card and then 'more info'.
Write down all the IP numbers, DNS, gateway, etc. And then just use them
when you boot back into Linux. In Linux as root at the command prompt
type netconf and select "Basic Host Info"; DNS; Gateways and enter the
appropriate IP numbers. In X go to Drakconf and the select Network
Configuration

It would be a lot easier if you don't have a static IP from the cable
company.
You then can use DHCP. Just make sure you have dhcp installed and
dhcpxd.
Then just go to netconf and select DHCP , enter the appropriate gateway
and everything should work ( you can use dhcpxd to acquire an IP address
and the gateway)

Good Luck

You can check out your XF86config file under the section of pointers.
there is a line here that tells you to uncomment it if your cursor
appears as a white box (to uncomment you have to delete the '#' and
then save the resulting file)
You can do this in X as root using Kedit or from a command prompt (as
root) using ' pico' or 'vi'

I've installed it but I don't think I've integrated into Netscape yet.
in a terminal:
1) tar xvzf progam,tar,gz
if you're not already root
2)su; then ls to find a directory called ILINUX
3)cd to that directory- (there is a Readme.txt file, that younshould have a
look at)
type ./INSTALL and it will ask you some questions.
I had to make a directory- /usr/local/Acrobat4
because that is where it installs to.
I basicaly just stopped after I got it installed, leaving the browser
integration for another day.
Hope this helps

 You uncompress the archive :
tar zxf linux-ar-405.tar.gz
then you go into the newly created directoy, su to root, and execute the
 installation script :
./INSTALL (or is it ./SETUP???)

Then, the rest should be self prompting.

walked away after indicating which additional packages i wanted, because
it took so long for the package installatiion to initialize. I was
surprised when I came back to it that it had asked for the 2nd CD and
the drive was already open, just waiting.
Maybe we have to let the 'install' open the drive? No intervention on

 Hi everybody,

i have a short question on PCMCIA.
I am using the PCMCIA-Version wich was shipped with LM 7.0. It is the
 Version 3.1.9.
I bought a AboCom PCMCIA CardBus Networtcard. On installation i left
the Card in the CardBusSlot of my Notebook.
LM 7.0 detects it but "insmod tulip" failed, without any showen error.
After installation i went to "netconf" and set the network up. Here
 are my settings.

 IP:192.168.1.3
 NM:255.255.255.0
 Interface eth0
 Modul tulip

In lothar the card is recognized too, and in the KDE-Controlpanel the
 Card is showen as as
 LinkSys 10/100 Fast Ethernet-Card.
The "ifconfig" shows that the interface is up and running using the
IRQ 9. It can ping to itself but not to the other computers.
On startup PCMCIA is started and the LED´s of the PCMCIA-connector
are on. That shows me that the card is connectet to the 100Mbit
swith in full duplex. But then came the message up "Tx hung 13. vs.

I have tried everythig. I also postet the message-files to the
AboCom-Support. They say that everything is alright and they can´t
understand why this card wont work.

Has someone outthere any suggestion how to solve this probleme?

 Thanks
 Thorsten

PS.On the basis of my bad english i hope you will understand what

you can use the installation CD to format the partitions:
-expert mode
-any class but server
format the partitions, click done, then exit the install.
OR
if you have a DOS disk then type fdisk, delete the partitions (non dos)
and then exit fdisk.
The problem with using DOS is that although it sees the linux partitions
(non-dos)
it is rarely able to delete the partitions , that 's why I suggested the first
option.
OR
if you have Partition Magic then you can just delete and format the
partitions.

then the screen turned black for like 2 seconds, then it went to a
screen full of gray x's. i shutdown the comp. rebooted, and it started
in the mandrake dos type thing where it asks for my localhost login.
after that, all i get is this prompt...
 [paul@localhost paul]$
and from there i don't know what to do. i tried to re-install linux
over again to setup x-windowsbut no avail either. help please! God

Computers are not intelligent. They only think they are.
I have to say that I'm in the same boat with Anthony.
I was introduced to Linux in February of this year (2000) in a
networking class I took at the local Community College. The instructor
gave a demo of a Red Hat install; some how I convinced him to let me
make copies (at home of course -:)). I proceeded to install Red Hat 6.1
that night on my computer at home. BOY was I frustrated, couldn't even
get my modem to work, so I rebooted into Win98, searched the web for
anything and everything to do with Linux; I came across Linux Care or
one of those sites that had links to all the distributions, and I just
went through each and everyone until I came to Mandrake's page.
I was so impressed with the demos of the installer that I started
downloading the iso of 7.0 immediately. At the time I had a 56K modem
and it took me about 44 hours to download the complete image. Then
things really started getting interesting!
I must have installed that thing about 15 times before I got
everything working-- one night I installed, reformatted, reinstalled
about 5 times (basically , I couldn't get my IDE cd-burner to work when
everything else worked or vice versa). I know, I know all I had to do
was recompile the kernel after about the second install and then
everything would have been fine, but just those words 'compile the
kernel' scared the beejeezus out of me. Needless to say that in the end,
I recompiled the kernel got everything working and not only am I
extremely satisfied with Mandrake , I've basically installed the beta
versions of the upcoming release, not only on my desktop but also on an
older laptop that I came across.I confess that if it wasn't for my
stubbornness (make that tenacity) I would still be using Windows.

Hi all ,

Normally to start it up I would open a console change directory to
/home/mydir/netscape6/package
and then type
'./netscape' (without the qoutes)
and it would start no problem.
.the problem of adding the shortcut by right clicking the desktop and adding
this path is that it wouldn't do the './netscape thingy'. I was stumped.
I asked one of the local Linux 'gurus'
and he basically just wrote a liitle script with pico or one of the text
editors, probably 'kedit' that looks like this

cd /home/mydir/netscape6/package
./netscape
saved it as 'runnetscape'
and then used that path for the shortcut's executable
i.e
/home/mydir/runnetscape

and it worked!

thought I would share that with everyone

Denis Are you the daddy? -)
then maybe you can solve this small problem that I've asked on the

"Hi,
I'm using MDK 7.1 beta
I have an MS intellimouse ,ps/2.
I would like to have imwheel start automatically, or even be able to start
it as a regular user (It worked fine in v.7.02). The only way I seem to get
the wheel working is to change to 'su' in a terminal ,and type imwheel -k
and then it starts. I've tried changing the permissions but still no luck as
anyone other than the superuser starting this process.
**I have asked this question before, but didn't get a response."

Re: [newbie] Mouseconfig - MS Intellimouse (PS/2)

2000-05-05 Thread Eunice Thompson

Thanks Aaron for posting this.
I am using the beta of MDK 7.1 and I also had the same problem with my MS
Intellimouse . The only way that I could use the wheel mouse was to open a
console as root and type 'imwheel' and then the process would start. If I
closed the window then the wheel would stop.
I'm subscribing to the Cooker lists and read that " 'imwheel' starts
automatically with X ." when I asked for a possible workaround for the
problem I was pleasantly ignored or overlooked.
I tried your workaround and it works great --THANKS!

Why is it that when I select MS Intellimouse (PS/2) from the list in
Mouseconfig it will not work correctly in X?
My mouse is a PS/2 Intellimouse.
The symptoms are the pointer will automatically move to the upper-right
corner of the screen and the button-press events (menus) will fire
randomly.

My workaround is to use the generic 3 button PS/2 mouse settings. I'm
really curious as to why this happens. Do others have the problem? And
are there really any differences between selecting Intellimouse or generic
 mouse?

 Thanks,

Thanks Jag,
you are correct. A number of us were using HyperTerminal in our Networking
Lab to configure the Cisco routers, I wanted to do it from my Linux box,
unfortunately either I didn't have minicom installed or I just was unable to
locate it. I am able to telnet into the router from Linux , it's just
basically a different interface and initial setup.
So where did you say 'minicom' was located?

And yes I think Minicom is the answer

On this subject, does anyone know how many reboots it takes to hit the
"Maximal
Mount Count" or the file that I can look at to see for myself? I'm just
sorta
curious about how many reboots I get per "period".

I booted into mandrake and got an error message that:
"hda3 and hda6 (linux partitions) had reached the maximal mount
count,
checked forced ."
I assume this has something to do with /var/log/bootlog
I think I read somewhere that there is a way to automatically remove
old
bootlogs and only keep the last (x) number of entries.
In other words is there a way to automatically reset after 30 days,
and
move the old logs to another file to be put on a floppy?

Thanks
Eunice

AFAIK this is normal behavior, every so many boots the system decides to
check partitions/disks somewhat like old Micro$oft's Scandisk.
It can take some time, but is all in all a good idea.
If it finds errors in the file system it also fixes them.
Do you wan't to disable this?, or just delete logs, or what?

Reboot and you should have your wheel mouse working in netscape. Good

A client of mine told me to try re-installing it as a SERVER option, and
that this would help. Now that i have done this, I dont get X up when I
boot. Rather than the login window with a penguin, i get a plain white box

Thats it, no icons, taskbar, menus, clock, just two console windows. I

2000-03-03 Thread Eunice Thompson

UPDATE
I (sigh) reinstalled MDK again (10th time?) but I finally got everything
working ( so far). It took some tweaking, but I think it was worth it.
My problems with the sound stemmed from the fact that the sound driver
emu10k1,was written for the 2.2.14-15mdk kernel version and at the time of
yesterday's post I was running the 2.2.14-1mdklinus version. It seems that
depending on the type and class of installation that I initially selected,
determined which kernel version was the default. I never performed the
'recommended' install, because I wanted to have control over using LILO (I
don't use it, I use a floppy disk to boot up MDK) So I've used the custom,
normal installation and version 2.2.14-15mdk was the default. here, my
CD/cdwriter needed tweaking (i.e. change IDE to SCSI emulation) but I kept
getting error messages I had no rule to *make* when I tried to run xconfig,
or menuconfig, just config (following the instructions on the linuxgurus
site)
So I reinstalled , chose, expert-normal,
and just blindly selected everything.
here it seems that the default kernel was 2.2.14-1mdklinus. I could make
kernel compilations, get my CD drives working, but no sound ( this is where
I was yesterday). So I downloaded the tarball driver, followed the
instructions, and at the end, got a load of error messages, the prime one
being that "the emu10xxx, driver used is for kernel v.2.2.14-15mdk, and
you're using 2.2.14-1mdklinus". I must admit that I tried searching for the
appropriate driver, and even read a mini how-to, to correct these error
messages, but it began to get extremely complicated, and yes frustration
set in, so... I reformatted the partition and yes, reinstalled MDK. This
time I chose the expert-development route and paid extremely close attention
to what was being installed (I'm sure I included stuff that I probably won't
use), especially if it had to do with the kernel. SO I rebooted and watched
the scrolling messages fly by, the only error message that I got had to do
with the CD drives having bad blocks. I had version 2.2.14-15mdk again, with
sound and no access to the CD drives. This time though I was able to "make
xconfig" and recompile the kernel and .
WHEW, everything so far is working Music , printer , internet. I know that
the reason why I chose to reformat/install so many times is because I didn't
really have anything to lose , just time and internet configurations. But
everything appears to be working... so far.

Hey , I finally got my printer working!!
It didn't take a degree in rocket science either!
I noticed that as i was booting up, during POST, the Parallel Port was
 listed as 'disabled'.
I thought that was really strange because the printer works fine in
Windows, but I couldn't get it to work in MDK ( didn't even detect it).
I went into the CMOS, changed the setting for the Parallel Port (to the
'Setup Default') booted into MDK and saw messages that the parport0 was
detected. After logging in, starting X, I started 'DrakConf"went to
printer setup and everything fell into place, WHEW.

Now to the problem at hand.
Also ,as MDK was loading , I saw an error message stating that it
couldn't find the sound module. when I run "sndconfig" i get a message
" The modules used for your card (SBLive), emu10k1.o, is not currently
in your module search path. Please verify that your kernel modules are
 currently installed.
O.K. so now what do i do (after i download the emu10k1 tar driver from
 Creative)

I never performed the
'recommended' install, because I wanted to have control over using LILO (I
don't use it, I use a floppy disk to boot up MDK) So I've used the custom,
normal installation and version 2.2.14-15mdk was the default. here, my

Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error

2000-02-27 Thread Eunice Thompson

Sam,
Can you get a copy of DOS on a floppy?
If so then boot the floppy and at the A:/ prompt, type in 'fdisk' . When you
get into this program you are presented with a number of options... 1,2,3,4,
choose option 4 and look at what partitions you have on your hard drive
(Win98 is considered a non-Dos partition). You can usually figure out which
partition is Win 98 by the size or it should just be on the C: drive. see if
it's active, if not go back to the first screen listing options.
From here you can set the active partitions and also delete any partitions
you don't want.

Sam,I'm surprised you have't said, 'the hell with it!" and just reformat
your hard drive. Start out with a clean slate, install Win 98, make a
boot
floppy for Partition Magic (BTW, don't use BOOT MAGIC); make another
 primary
partition for Linux and install Linux. You may want to boot to Linux
using
 a
boot floppy (you can make one of these during the installation, just
 before
you configure LILO). Also you don't have to install LILO, when asked if
 you
want to use LILO just say NO. Then you'll be able to boot Win98 by
default
and if you want Linux ,just boot with the floppy.
  GOOD LUCK

As I've mentioned before, I've been having problems with PartitionMagic.
I
installed PartitionMagic, then mandrake linux 7, then decided to delete
 the
linux partition. No longer does my computer load lilo, or list linux as
a
partition, but PartitionMagic still loads as a dos program when the
 computer
starts up and tells me "That linux partition could not be deleted. The
operating system partition being deleted was not found." The only option
 it
gives me is to click ok, which shuts down the computer and repeats the
  process.
I tried going to my other computer and doing a sys a:, and also
 putting
fdisk from my other computer onto the disk. I then put this disk in the
computer that wouldn't load windows, and it gave me an a prompt. I tried
typing fdisk /mbr, but it didn't make a difference for the next time i
booted the computer. What can I do?
Please give me a detailed enough anwser because I've tried to solve
 this
  problem numerous ways.

I don't seem to be able to use the cdplayer to play audio CD's.

I reinstalled the os for the 6th,7th,or 8th? time everything seems to work
 fine without any kernel intervention/recompilation.
(supermount works fine). I still cannot play audio CD's

Thanks for any help or insight
