You really don't need to use Partition Magic- just install Windows first, then put the Mandrake installation CD in and do a 'Custom' install. When you get to the partitioning of the drive you'll find that the whole drive is one big FAT partition. If you click on it there's an option to resize and it will also show just exactly how much space Windows is taking up. After you resize you can either manually create the partitions or click on 'Auto-allocate' and then 'Done' Hope this helps On Sat, 19 Aug 2000, you wrote: From some of your responses it sounds like there are more than a few good laptops out there for running Linux. Re: [newbie] RedHat 6.2 GUI Login Problem
Hmmm First I must really emphasize that this is a MANDRAKE list. Now that that's out of the way, are you in X when you do the ctrl,alt,F7? If so then that's the problem. When in X, if you want to switch to a text console, then you do ctrl, alt F'n', where 'n' = a number 1 -6. By default X is on tty7, so if you do the "ctrl,alt,F7" thingy while in X , I believe you've caused confusion in your system. To get out of X and back to any login prompt, whether, it's a text mode login or the GUI try: CTRL-ALT-Backspace. One Final WORD... This is a Mandrake list, so why not give it a try? I also have a Linksys router attached to a cable modem and although my ISP uses dhcp I was unable to get the router to work when using DHCP from ISP in the router setup; I finally got it to work by letting the router assume that I had a static IP and entering all the necessary items during the router setup( you can get all this info, i.e., host name, domain name ip address, gateway, dns ip if you're also using Windows by using 'winipcfg'for Win98 or 'ipconfig' for WinNT at a DOS prompt ) Then i have my router as a DHCP server. As I sit here thinking about it maybe it would work if , in the router setup you indicated the ISP as DHCP and then assign each PC an IP address and netmask using the router's IP as a gateway (of course). Re: [newbie] X-server crash
If you automatically boot into X at startup and subsequently X fails, do not ssume that you have to do a reinstall. if you are using LILO then at the boot prompt just type in linux 3 and it will boot to a command prompt, from there you can login and as root run Xconfigurator to fix or just to reset (?) the Xserver. A lot of people that I've talked to don't boot into X for this very reason. Also if X is crahing a lot maybe you should play around with the settings in Xconfigurator until you get one that seems stable.

Mark, It was my pleasure, I'm glad everything worked out. When I first installed Mandrake I could't get my printer to work either- it is a parallel port Canon 4400 which every piece of documentatiion says should work in Linux. It worked fine in windows so I was stumped. One day as I was waiting for the LILO prompt after POST, I noticed that my parallel port was set to disable ( this is the screen immediately after the memeory check and hardware detection when you first turn your computer on and it lists everything- irq's, port settings, etc-)I went into my bios , enabled the parallel port and turned the printer on, booted into Mandrake and during the boot sequence i heard the printer initialize--IT WORKED!! I don't know if your solution to your printer problem will be as simple as this, but it is something to check as you run down the list of possible causes. Good Luck Eunice
Re: [newbie] Cable Modem Blues
if you still have Windows installed , make sure the modem is connected and then boot into Windows. ( I'm assuming that the modem has already been installed and configured for use) if you're using Win98 then go to StartRun, type in winipcfg and select OK (in WinNT do the same except the command is ipconfig). A window should come up, select the Nic card and then 'more info'. Write down all the IP numbers, DNS, gateway, etc. And then just use them when you boot back into Linux. In Linux as root at the command prompt type netconf and select "Basic Host Info"; DNS; Gateways and enter the appropriate IP numbers. In X go to Drakconf and the select Network Configuration It would be a lot easier if you don't have a static IP from the cable company. You then can use DHCP. Just make sure you have dhcp installed and dhcpxd. Then just go to netconf and select DHCP , enter the appropriate gateway and everything should work ( you can use dhcpxd to acquire an IP address and the gateway) Good Luck Eunice Thompson
Re: [newbie] I just get a Big White Box :-(
You can check out your XF86config file under the section of pointers. there is a line here that tells you to uncomment it if your cursor appears as a white box (to uncomment you have to delete the '#' and then save the resulting file) You can do this in X as root using Kedit or from a command prompt (as root) using ' pico' or 'vi' Eunice Thompson

Heh, then I guess I'm certifiably nuts : ) I debated between gettting the packaged version or just a plain CD, and I went with the plain CD. I just got through by reading a whole whole lot (most of the manual is online, and I bought a small Linux book along with the CD), and reinstalling a whole lot after I'd screw up. But I did eventually get it right, and I've been running this same "version" for about 5 months now. It was definitly a learning experiance, and if I had to do it all over again, I'd probally still pick the CD since I've probally learned a lot more than I would have if I stuck with the packaged version. -- Anthony Huereca http://m3000.1wh.com Computers are not intelligent. They only think they are. I have to say that I'm in the same boat with Anthony. I was introduced to Linux in February of this year (2000) in a networking class I took at the local Community College. The instructor gave a demo of a Red Hat install; some how I convinced him to let me make copies (at home of course -:)). I proceeded to install Red Hat 6.1 that night on my computer at home. BOY was I frustrated, couldn't even get my modem to work, so I rebooted into Win98, searched the web for anything and everything to do with Linux; I came across Linux Care or one of those sites that had links to all the distributions, and I just went through each and everyone until I came to Mandrake's page. I was so impressed with the demos of the installer that I started downloading the iso of 7.0 immediately. At the time I had a 56K modem and it took me about 44 hours to download the complete image. Then things really started getting interesting! I must have installed that thing about 15 times before I got everything working-- one night I installed, reformatted, reinstalled about 5 times (basically , I couldn't get my IDE cd-burner to work when everything else worked or vice versa). I know, I know all I had to do was recompile the kernel after about the second install and then everything would have been fine, but just those words 'compile the kernel' scared the beejeezus out of me. Needless to say that in the end, I recompiled the kernel got everything working and not only am I extremely satisfied with Mandrake , I've basically installed the beta versions of the upcoming release, not only on my desktop but also on an older laptop that I came across.I confess that if it wasn't for my stubbornness (make that tenacity) I would still be using Windows. [newbie] Netscape6 desktop shortcut revisited
Hi all , I was having a really hard time adding the shortcut to Netscape6 to the Desktop. Normally to start it up I would open a console change directory to /home/mydir/netscape6/package and then type './netscape' (without the qoutes) and it would start no problem. .the problem of adding the shortcut by right clicking the desktop and adding this path is that it wouldn't do the './netscape thingy'. I was stumped. I asked one of the local Linux 'gurus' and he basically just wrote a liitle script with pico or one of the text editors, probably 'kedit' that looks like this cd /home/mydir/netscape6/package ./netscape saved it as 'runnetscape' and then used that path for the shortcut's executable i.e /home/mydir/runnetscape and it worked! thought I would share that with everyone Eunice Thompson

Hope this helps - Original Message - From: "Roger Bird" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Newbie" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2000 7:35 AM Subject: [newbie] Odd install problem --- did not set up X I performed a new install of MD 7.0-2 last night on my AMD K6-2 350 w/ ATI xpert@play, 5.1gb, 96mb. I did an "Expert" install. It detected my nic and I correctly configured @home. (cool!) But the DrakX (i think that is what the install program is called) completely skipped over the "configure X" portion of the install. I did instruct the install to install all X-Windows programs. Xconfigurator, xconf, startx, ... none of this works (yes I ran them as root) So now I have just regular text mode. I need to get X working. What is the easiest way to do this? I want to use KDE. On a previous install, x worked fine and installed all the great icons in KDE. The only problem was my nic was not being detected, so I did a re-install. Not the nic is fine, @home is fine, but X does not work. Please help. Thank you. Roger -- Roger Bird [EMAIL PROTECTED] Toronto, Ontario
Re: [newbie] start imwheel automatically
Here's an excerpt from a post dated 3/6/00 from the 'alt.os.mandrake' newsgroup, that I used to get mine working ...Now you need to create a link in your KDE Autostart folder which is on your desktop to 'imwheel'. Do this by opening the Autostart folder, right click in the window and select 'new' and 'application'. Change the name from 'program' to 'imwheel.kdelnk' and click 'OK'. Then click on 'Execute' and then browse to /usr/X11R6/bin/imwheel and then click 'OK' and then click 'OK' again, close Autostart and you're done! Reboot and you should have your wheel mouse working in netscape. Re: [newbie] Explain this if you can
Oliver, you don't have any xwindow managers installed (I think that's the term). If you put the installation CD in and selectexpertserver, then you'll be able to add and specify more components. you might be able to do this by just doing an upgrade. - Original Message - From: "Oliver Marshall" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 06, 2000 8:23 AM Subject: [newbie] Explain this if you can I installed Mandrake using the recommended option, and basically went with the defaults. It all worked ok, but i couldnt telnet into the unix box from anywhere on the network. A client of mine told me to try re-installing it as a SERVER option, and that this would help. Now that i have done this, I dont get X up when I boot. Rather than the login window with a penguin, i get a plain white box with username and password. If i log on, I get two console windows come up. Thats it, no icons, taskbar, menus, clock, just two console windows. I cant use CTL ESC to change tasks. Any Ideas ? I thought I told it to reboot into X when it loads, and have indeed tried to reinstall it once more with the same results. Olly
[newbie] Sorry to see you go
Steve, Hi, I was catching up on my mail and I saw your post, stating that it would be your last. I hope this will reach you. I don't know about the rest of the newbies, but I for one will miss your posts. You were extremely helpful, always well informed, and yes even pretty patient. You've helped me to make the transition from Windows to Linux without too much hair-pulling. Although I haven't thrown Windows out the window, I'm able to experiment with Linux and actually relax and enjoy myself. Enjoy your time off Thanks again, you've been a big help. Re: [newbie] Printer working; no sound modules
UPDATE I (sigh) reinstalled MDK again (10th time?) but I finally got everything working ( so far). It took some tweaking, but I think it was worth it. My problems with the sound stemmed from the fact that the sound driver emu10k1,was written for the 2.2.14-15mdk kernel version and at the time of yesterday's post I was running the 2.2.14-1mdklinus version. It seems that depending on the type and class of installation that I initially selected, determined which kernel version was the default. I never performed the 'recommended' install, because I wanted to have control over using LILO (I don't use it, I use a floppy disk to boot up MDK) So I've used the custom, normal installation and version 2.2.14-15mdk was the default. here, my CD/cdwriter needed tweaking (i.e. change IDE to SCSI emulation) but I kept getting error messages I had no rule to *make* when I tried to run xconfig, or menuconfig, just config (following the instructions on the linuxgurus site) So I reinstalled , chose, expert-normal, and just blindly selected everything. here it seems that the default kernel was 2.2.14-1mdklinus. I could make kernel compilations, get my CD drives working, but no sound ( this is where I was yesterday). So I downloaded the tarball driver, followed the instructions, and at the end, got a load of error messages, the prime one being that "the emu10xxx, driver used is for kernel v.2.2.14-15mdk, and you're using 2.2.14-1mdklinus". I must admit that I tried searching for the appropriate driver, and even read a mini how-to, to correct these error messages, but it began to get extremely complicated, and yes frustration set in, so... I reformatted the partition and yes, reinstalled MDK. This time I chose the expert-development route and paid extremely close attention to what was being installed (I'm sure I included stuff that I probably won't use), especially if it had to do with the kernel. SO I rebooted and watched the scrolling messages fly by, the only error message that I got had to do with the CD drives having bad blocks. I had version 2.2.14-15mdk again, with sound and no access to the CD drives. This time though I was able to "make xconfig" and recompile the kernel and . WHEW, everything so far is working Music , printer , internet. I know that the reason why I chose to reformat/install so many times is because I didn't really have anything to lose , just time and internet configurations. But everything appears to be working... so far. After logging in, starting X, I started 'DrakConf"went to printer setup and everything fell into place, WHEW. Now to the problem at hand. Also ,as MDK was loading , I saw an error message stating that it couldn't find the sound module. when I run "sndconfig" i get a message " The modules used for your card (SBLive), emu10k1.o, is not currently in your module search path. Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error
Sam, Can you get a copy of DOS on a floppy? If so then boot the floppy and at the A:/ prompt, type in 'fdisk' . When you get into this program you are presented with a number of options... 1,2,3,4, choose option 4 and look at what partitions you have on your hard drive (Win98 is considered a non-Dos partition). You can usually figure out which partition is Win 98 by the size or it should just be on the C: drive. see if it's active, if not go back to the first screen listing options. From here you can set the active partitions and also delete any partitions you don't want. - Original Message - From: "Sam Junge" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 27, 1998 4:44 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error I never backed up my hd, so i have like 350 mp3's and a bunch of other irreplaceable stuf. . - Original Message - From: "Eunice Thompson" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2000 5:15 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error Sam,I'm surprised you have't said, 'the hell with it!" and just reformat your hard drive.
